Kumba Iron Ore, a business unit of Anglo American, heeded the call to observe a day of safety and health at all their operation. On 29 October 2018 all operations simultaneously held their safety and health day - Sishen mine (Kathu - Northern Cape), Kolomela mine (Postmasburg - Northern Cape), Stay in Business Projects (Northern Cape), Exploration (Heuningkranz – Northern Cape), Kumba Corporate office (Centurion - Gauteng), Saldanha Port Operation (Saldanha Bay – Western Cape), Thabazimbi mine (Thabazimbi – Limpopo province)

A dedicated local event was held at each site to reflect on and celebrate the companies’ safety leadership journey. The day also provided the opportunity to acknowledge team and individual achievements. The energising events enabled everyone to identify and commit to the actions that need to be taken to master leadership’s role in the safety journey. At these events employees and/or motivational speakers were given the opportunity to share heartfelt messages with the audiences. A Mine Health and Safety Act Section 23 trophy was also presented at each site for stopping unsafe work with the goal in mind to encourage employees to stop unsafe work.

A generic speech was created for all exco members to share at the respective sites in order to ensure the messaging was consistent across the group. At the conclusion of each speech each exco member was encouraged to add their own personal safety reflection as well.

“Our theme for this year is, being a safety leader. The theme sets us all a clear challenge: it asks each of us to become the best possible safety leader we can be; to be unconditional about safety; to be unaccepting of unsafe work; and to live our safety Value every day. This is important to us becoming - and staying - fatality free.”

“Being a safety leader means having the courage to be open and honest – with ourselves and each other – about what we do well and the areas we need to strengthen. We all need to ask if we are truly being unconditional when it comes to safety – not just in theory but in practice.”
